What are Executive Functioning Skills?

image00009_edited.png

Welcome to Your Brain's Control Centre!

Executive functioning is like the brain's management system.  It helps you organise your thoughts, plan your actions, make decisions and handle daily life.  These skills allow you to get things done, solve problems and regulate your emotions.

The core skills that make up Executive Functioning are:

Working Memory

Holding and using information in your mind while doing something

(e.g., remembering instructions while solving a problem).

Organisation

Creating systems to keep track of tasks, information and materials

Time Management

Estimating how long things take and using time wisely to meet deadlines

Cognitive Flexibility

Shifting your thinking or approach when things change or when new information appears.

Self-Monitoring (Metacognition)

Being aware of your own thinking, behaviour and progress.

Planning

Setting goals, breaking them into steps and figuring out how to achieve them.

Task Initiation

Starting tasks on your own without unnecessary delay or procrastination.

Response Inhibition

Pausing to think before acting; stopping impulsive behaviours

Emotional Regulation

Managing emotions in ways that fit the situation

Why Executive Functioning Matters

Everyday life depends on these skills. They help you:

Start and finish tasks
Stay organised
Handle change
Manage time and meet deadlines
Control emotions and behaviour
Solve problems and make decisions

When these skills are strong, life feels more manageable.  When they are challenging, tasks can feel overwhelming, frustrating or confusing.

Executive Functioning and the Brain

Executive functions live mostly in the prefrontal cortex of your brain (right behind your forehead).  But they also involve a team of other brain regions that help with attention, memory, emotions and movement. Think of it like a team working together to help you think, feel and act in a coordinated way.

Who uses Executive Functions?

Everyone!

These skills are used by children, teens and adults every day at school, at work and in relationships.  People with ADHD, autism, learning differences, anxiety or sensory processing differences may experience extra challenges with executive functioning, but everyone can strengthen these skills with support and practice.
